Order certificates before submitting the death registration to BDM.

Ordering process

Order certificates before submitting the death registration to BDM.

  1. Complete all mandatory information on the death registration form
  2. Save the form
  3. Order a certificate from:
    • The button at the bottom of the form, or
  • Order and save buttons at the end of a death registration form
  • The Drafts list (select Request certificate to the right of the draft)
  • View and request certificate links available in funeral directors' Drafts list
  1. Submit the death registration form to BDM
  2. Pay for the certificate from the submitted list

Fill in the certificate order form

  • Provide the quantity and reason; click ‘Next’
  • Fill in the delivery details > ‘Next’
  • Fix any validation errors > ‘Next’
  • Review the order details > ‘Save as draft’

Return to the Drafts list and submit the death registration, then pay for the certificate.

Is the death under coronial investigation?

If the death is being investigated by the coroner, you can:

  • Order the death certificate package, or
  • Apply for an interim death certificate.

Cancel a certificate order

From the Drafts list:

  • Locate the item. It will have ‘Yes’ under ‘Certificate requested?’
  • Click Delete certificate. You will be prompted to confirm.

You can’t cancel certificate orders after submitting the death registration.

Timeframes for certificate orders

Once the death is registered and we receive payment, the certificate is usually sent out the next day.
