BDM records and statistics

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria (BDM) keeps comprehensive records and statistics for Victoria.

Organisations may apply to access this data for research. These organisations may include government departments, research organisations, and universities.

We're happy to consider reasonable data requests on application. Note that the Registrar decides who may access data.

How to apply

Email bdmdatarequests@justice.vic.gov.au(opens in a new window) and provide:

  • Your name
  • Your organisation (if appropriate)
  • Data required
  • Reason for data request
  • For data matching services, the approximate number of records you want us to match against Registry records.
  • For medical research projects, you must also provide:
    • Your study protocol, and
    • Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) approvals

What happens next?

After we receive your request, we'll email you. If appropriate, we'll get you to pay the application fee.

Data matching

We can match data you provide against our Register. For example, researchers can assess mortality rate by data matching against deaths data.

Data extraction

We can extract data with certain criteria, such as date range or location of event. This service is often used by our strategic partners, such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
