Applying for someone else’s certificate is similar to applying for your own certificate. The only difference is that you need to prove you're authorised to do so.
You don't need authorisation to apply for your own child's certificate if:
- they're under 18 years of age
- you can prove you are their parent (for example, with the child’s birth certificate naming you as a parent).
Both parents need to apply if there are two parents listed on the child’s certificate.
Certificates for adults (over 18)
You can apply for another adult's recognised details certificate if they authorise you.
This includes your own children if they are over 18 years of age. At 18, children are legally recognised as adults and access to their records by third parties is restricted.
To apply, you'll need:
- Your own proof of identity
- Proof of identity for the person whose certificate it is, and
- A letter from the person whose certificate it is, authorising you to apply on their behalf. This letter must include their:
- Residential address
- Daytime telephone number
- Signature.
