Child wellbeing and safety

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. We have a zero-tolerance approach for racism, gender bias, child abuse and harm.

We recognise that children’s:

  • rights, relationships, identity and culture need to be respected
  • voices need to be heard and valued, and
  • concerns need to be taken seriously and acted upon.

We are committed to providing a child safe and child friendly environment for all children and young people who come in contact with us.

BDM will provide a culturally safe environment for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, and
  • those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds.

We will consider their needs in providing that environment.

Our work impacts children and young people in the following ways:

  • Processing applications to register and get certificates for their:
    • birth
    • change of name; and
    • change a record of sex.
  • Outreach activities within Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • When appropriate, seeking their or their family’s views or sharing information with authorised organisations under the Child Information Sharing Scheme. The Scheme permits this where it is to promote the wellbeing or safety of Victorian children.
