What information can be accessed

This part of the Access policy outlines the format and details of information which the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria will release.

The Registry of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria (BDM) can provide information in the following formats:

Legal certificates
  • Includes birth, death and marriage certificates
  • A legal certificate can be used for all legal purposes including proof of identity
Commemorative certificates
  • Commemorative designs are available for births and registered relationships
  • Cannot be used as proof of identity
Letters of verification
  • Letter to confirm whether an event has been entered on a register kept by BDM
  • Can include some information about the registered event
  • May be used to meet the requirements of other agencies.
Information only certificateCannot be used as proof of identity
InformationData relating to an individual or many people kept by BDM.
